Salema, Portugal
This morning we once again packed our daypacks full of water for it was going to be another 90 degree day. Today's hike was going to be to the inland part of the Algarve.
We were picked up by our driver, Giuseppe who drove us to the start of our inland hike from the small village of Barao de St. Miguel.
But first, Giuseppe took us to his favorite hole in the wall cafe frequented by the locals which served the best coffee I'd had in Portugal.
It also had a cigarette vending machine!
Fortified with espresso, we hit the dusty trail.
We had wanted to see what the local countryside looked like and it was rather amazing.
Our guidebook read, "Here the footpath is poorly defined and it is necessary to follow a little instinct to discover the right path through the bushes...!"
Looking at the GPS to locate the trail amidst the sugarcane.
Lots of thistles along the way!
We saw Algarve fig trees (as pictured below), olive trees and carob trees.
Over to the far right we could see Boca do Rio Beach and we were nearly there.
Finally, we're back in Salema
to the surf, the sand and some refreshing watermelon!
We spent the following day in Salema relaxing, exploring this lovely, sleepy fishing village, swimming, walking along the beach
and reveling in the beauty of the
sunset.
